This week started the girls basketball sectional tournaments...I got a couple pre-game locker room shots that I really liked from the Northeast Dubois game and then a mascot photo from the Jasper game that ran in Wednesday's paper. Basketball tournament time is probably one of my favorite times of the year just because emotions are high and the fans really get into the games....especially when the boys games start up at the end of the month. Woohoo Hoosier Hysteria!!

I've been working on a Saturday story on Huntingburg Greenhouse's Keith Bauer. Bauer does flowers, decorating, and coordinating for events and weddings...he's kind of a one stop party shop. He is even ordained to marry people....and plays Santa for Christmas parties. Anyway I followed him through a wedding day a couple weeks ago and came out with a couple extra photos I liked that are not related to the story. Enjoy :)

We've been editing my 2011 photos for the year end contests. I came out of the year with strong stories on the Forest Park Dance team and German exchange student Laura Lang and a lot of nice kid features. Here are a couple of my favorite photos from the year.

I am a little late getting this up on my blog but better late than never. One of my favorite Saturday stories we do every year is where the photo department picks out their two favorite photos of the year and we write a small paragraph to reflect on the photo. these are the two i picked and what i had to say about them.

Comments: One of the coolest things about being a photographer for The Herald is that no matter which community I return to for a feature photo, I see people I’ve met before, usually during a previous photo assignment. As each year passes, I see familiar children growing up and changing form. Around Herbstfest time, a year had passed since I first saw Rebecca Snider of Huntingburg during one of my searches for a feature photo. She was 4 then, and I found her on Chestnut Street helping her mother spray paint Halloween decorations for their yard. Then, there she was again almost a year later at League Stadium, a year older, competing for the title of Little Miss Herbstfest. This photo captures Rebecca chatting with “big girl” Rhegann Fetter, who was Miss Herbstfest Queen second runner-up. Rebecca had grown some – she seemed a little longer in the legs and her face more defined. I was drawn by the dreaminess of her expression. What a cutie. Seeing kids grow through my lens – or just seeing them thru the car window as I drive by -- makes me realize that I am no longer a newcomer to the county, that I have, as a frequenter of our various communities, developed my own sense of home here. What also drew me to this photo was the sense of specialness a young girl must feel being singled out to receive the sole attention of a wise old teenager—a member of Herbstfest royalty, to boot. This photo reinforces the special role I have as a photographer. Time keeps moving and people keep changing, but I have the ability and honor to freeze time for a single moment. I get to help create a historical record of the “Rebeccas” in our communities. In this photo, we have Rebecca Snider frozen in time during an extremely important event for a five year old. I will be keeping my eye out for her in the years to come, happy to witness her continued growth and successes.

Comments: Election night makes for an exciting time to be a photographer. The popular vote can bring life-changing moments to those on the ballot. In this case, for Republican Amy Lehr who survived a tight race with Democrat Marvin Boeglin for the at-large position in Huntingburg. Cool Beans Java Café was stuffed to the gills with Republicans awaiting the final election results. Supporters held their breaths as one by one the Republican candidates defeated the Democrats. The energy grew with each victory. It was a rush for me, like a good shot of caffeine, to witness the excitement of the moment, especially when my lens captured the tension and energy of Lehr and her most avid supporters as they awaited her results. Often times it’s the hands in a photo that tells a story. In this case, the hands hiding the face of the man in back, the clutching of hands between Lehr and her supporters, the assuring hand on Lehr’s right shoulder. The place exploded with yelps and applause when it was announced she had defeated Boeglin with 54 percent of the vote.

I started the saturday story on Kyle Kramer. Kyle has an organic farm in rural spencer county. He uses solar and wind energy to produce electricity for his house, which he designed and built. And he has a beautiful family. I took photos at the Southern Sweets bakery in Celestine as a standalone feature. One of my favorite quotes I got was "Who needs the gym when you roll dough everyday" The owner Terri also told stories about walking over to her grandmother's house to eat cinnamon rolls every Saturday morning when they were growing up and talked about bakery work as a dying art.

Went out to Winslow last night to photograph Jessie at the trainers...unfortunately it was so dark in the barn I only came away with a handful of photos in focus. I did learn that horses respond to every little movement of your body. just barely dropping your shoulder could make the knock over a barrel.

Herbstfest Favorites

Spent a rainy weekend out at the Herbstfest. These are some of my favorite feature photos i found. Of course the little/junior miss competition is one of my favorite things to shoot throughout the year...this is my third year shooting it. And I learned that people are really serious about the kiddie tractor pull....they go to every single one in the county during the summer. It turned out to be absolutely beautiful. In 2009 I was out feature hunting in Huntingburg and came across a family hanging out in a front yard. I stopped to make a photo and found out there was a death in their family and they had all gotten together after the funeral. I shot this photo. The Herald ran the photo of the uncle/nephew kissing. Two years later I shot a photo of an uncle and nephew at the Old School Baseball League and found out it was the same Uncle/nephew is shot in 2009...and they still have the photo hanging up in their houses.

After driving around for 5 hours without finding any kind of feature photo, a came upon these kids...who i actually shot a feature of in May 2010. When I pulled up they were filling up water balloons on a trampoline but eventually started blowing them up with their noses.

During the field games at the Rolling Hills Ride on Military Pride event people took on some risky challenges often dumping their motorcycles over. The board walk was the only event that did not require a motorcycle but they still ended up falling over.

For those of you who read the Herald, you've already seen a photo similar to this run in the paper last month. The big difference is that in the photo that ran in the paper you can see Elyssa's bat but in this photo the reaction is a little stronger. After the photo ran I received a hand written, colored thank you card from Elyssa...which is awesome because it reminded me of how important my job is to people in the community.
